Bellevue, WA (March 26, 2024)— Synology, an industry leader in backup and disaster recovery solutions, announced a significant milestone for its backup solutions, Active Backup and C2 Backup. Over 20 million SaaS user accounts, endpoints, servers, and VMs have been secured with Synology’s on-prem and cloud-powered backup services. In 2023, compared to the previous year, Active Backup Suite saw a 31% increase in newly-protected Microsoft 365 accounts and an 82% growth in newly-protected edge systems.

Since its introduction in 2017, Active Backup has been at the forefront of on-prem backup solutions, offering deployment versatility and ease of management across Windows, macOS, Linux, VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, and NetApp systems. The software suite extends comprehensive backup capabilities to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace accounts, ensuring a broad spectrum of data and IT services are protected.

With over 70% of business decision-makers expressing doubts about their IT defenses against ransomware or similar threats, the need for manageable, cost-effective backup solutions has never been greater,” stated Joanne Weng, Director of International Business at Synology. Our solution distinguishes itself by simplifying the entire sizing, deployment, and long-term management life-cycle of backup systems. This is important for IT departments as they grapple with limited budget, insufficient training, or staffing in a constantly changing environment.

Active Backup Suite: centralized protection for scattered data

Active Backup Suite is a collection of enterprise backup and recovery software that is available on Synology’s range of business-level servers. With centralized management and monitoring, alongside flexible recovery options, Active Backup Suite enables businesses to efficiently protect physical, virtual, and cloud data and restore critical systems near-instantaneously. Notably, Synology’s unique business model, which combines their backup software suite with hardware architectures, eliminates the need for per-device or account software licenses, thereby reducing users’ total cost of acquisition.

Active Backup Suite

Active Backup for Business, one component of the Active Backup Suite, facilitates backup for on-premises platforms, such as Windows, macOS, VMware, Hyper-V, file servers, and more. Another tool available is Active Backup for Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace, which supports backing up email, drive files, team repositories, contacts, and more.

Protect scattered data

Active Backup Suite integrates with Synology’s other disaster recovery tools, including Snapshot Replication and Hyper Backup, allowing organizations to back up data to other Synology NAS and cloud services. In the event of a service outage, these tools enable businesses to minimize downtime and quickly recover critical systems from an offsite server.

Customer story: Western Reserve Academy

Western Reserve Academy, a top boarding school in Hudson, Ohio, uses Active Backup to protect over 2400 cloud accounts alongside virtual machines and file servers. Teacher and student accounts across Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are backed up via Active Backup Suite to their primary backup server. For an added layer of protection, the academy utilizes Snapshot Replication to copy data from its primary server to a secondary NAS for quick recovery in case of disaster.

Brian Schwartz, Director of Network Administration at Western Reserve Academy, remarks, “I used to always be worried about problems with our backups. With Synology I can walk away and not worry about it – and that speaks volumes.”

Western Reserve Academy’s new centralized backup solution ensures the availability of essential data, while also saving the academy’s IT effort and resources. They can now retain student accounts and records long after graduation without facing perpetually rising costs.
